A Difficult Birth: Kosovar Independence and Eastern European Stability

On February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. While Serbia's government officially announced it was annulling the declaration of independence, that announcement appears unlikely to have any impact. More than twenty countries have already extended diplomatic recognition to an independent Kosovo, including many Western countries and countries in the Muslim world. SPECIAL FEATURE: The Arrest of the World's Most Wanted Man

Radovan Karadzic was arrested in Belgrade, Serbia, on July 21 after more than a decade in hiding. There have been riots and protests in Belgrade from Karadzic supporters, and celebration in Sarajevo. Officials of Republika Srpska (RS), the Bosnian Serb political entity, criticized the Bosnian government’s celebration.

Kosovo Revisited

On March 24th, 1999, Bill Clinton announced the bombing of Yugoslavia. By June 10th of that year the UN had approved a peace plan for Kosovo, effectively ending the bombing campaign. But nearly 9 years later, Kosovo's status is still unclear. The process of resolving Kosovo's final status has been stalled since the Ahtisaari plan was brought to the United Nations in January of 2007.
